Beautiful Buns for Spring 2011!

The black swan has inspired fashion, styling, makeup and hair since its release in 2010. The ballet bun has again made an appearance in the fashion stakes and has claimed its place at the top of my hairstyle list for 2011.

The classic ballet bun has been around since the mid 1980's, and has since evolved and developed with the time. This trend has been proven to be one of the biggest and easiest hair styles for Spring/Summer 2011. The bun is so versatile and perfect for all occasions, whether its casual, everyday, work, daytime, parties or events, this style can be worn.

The bun is so adaptable and can be worn in so many ways.

This hairstyle can be worn with braids, plaits and twists to give a beautiful updo, perfect for evenings and special events. Jessica Alba has been seen promoting this beautiful hairstyle and it looks perfect on her. Even though the style is messy it still gives an A* feel and a great look, something which I will definitely be copying!!

The hairstyle can be worn on the side of the head to give a contemporary fashion feel. This sort of look is great for fashion photography and evening looks as it gives an edgy feel to the wearer. This style can be worn loose or slick to the head, both looks are adaptable.

This style can be worn low to give a soft, romantic look. Nina Ricci's Spring look 2011 showcased some beautifully effortless low buns, which gave a soft and gentle feel. This look would be perfect for work and daytime as it is so easy to recreate and wear, and works well with all outfits.

I am looking forward to trying these looks out, you should to!

Are you ready for abduction? Katy Perry's E.T makeup!

Katy Perry is well known for her makeup, hair and styling within her career and is always pushing the boundaries with new ideas and creativity. This is shown within her new music video, E.T.

E.T, which is being launched today has some amazingly creative makeup looks. The promotional imagery that I have seen has been really inspiring and so exciting! I love the design and artistry, so pretty!

Kabuki, the makeup artist and head of myface.cosmetics has created some amazing makeup looks, perfect for the new music video. There are 3 different overall looks that I have seen. These looks have been inspired by ancient Rome, futurism and science fiction. The three looks are: an alien look, a fawn look and a tribal look, all of which have elements of futurism within them. The makeup artist based their designs on the themes as well as the outfits and styling.

Alien look

I love the contrasting colours in this look, the pink and blue work really well together and really compliment each other. I love the eye makeup and the statement lips. Perfect! This is my personal favourite out of the 3 looks!

Nails are such a big trend at the moment, they have been through a phase of not being thought about but now they are top of my beauty list! These nails are not very practical but look amazing in this video and on photo shoots etc. These particular nails remind me of Edward Scissorhands because of the intricate detail. Very pretty!

Tribal look

This is another look from the video, this look is inspired by tribal patterns and colours. I like the textures of the gems and the striking band of colour. I love how in the video the makeup transforms on her face. The styling with this look is flawless, the dress is floaty and free and creates a nice effect from the movement.

Fawn look

This makeup is based on an ancient Roman gladiator with a futuristic twist. The gold chest piece is perfect and compliments the makeup well. The makeup is made up of soft and warm tones of brown, beige etc, infused with different golds. The makeup also gives an animal feel, with the cat shaped eyes and print on the forehead. Gorgeous styling! I also love the huge, chunky gold plaits in the hair!

Katy spoke of the makeup process, saying that she found it hard to keep her patience when she had been sat in the makeup chair for 5-6 hours. It must have taken such a long time to get the perfect result ready for HD filming. The overall looks are stunning and so visual!

Barry M have cracked it again! 3 beautiful new shades of Nail Effects!

I was just browsing some new looks for my nails this spring and came across Barry M's new nail effects!

The original nail effects in black magic was incredibly popular and I saw so many people wearing it in many different ways, such as covering the whole nail, painting half, or only painting the tip.

Here are some more pictures of how the nail effects looks with different nail polishes:

As you can see the nail effects can dry in many different ways, either stripy like a barcode, patchy, blotchy and sometimes even looking like animal print. Have a play around to get the best look for you :)

I dreamed of the nail effects coming out in different colours and now it has, in 3 perfect shades for summer! Pink Fizz, White frost and Blue print, I'm especially excited for White frost, I think it will look amazing with pastel shades or neon colours!!

If any of you find it hard to paint nails or create a pretty effect with nail polish, this is the perfect product to use. It does not need a perfect application and it does all the hard work for you, if your feeling more creative you may be able to try new looks, let me know if you have used it in different ways!!

For £3.95 its the cheapest and easiest nail art to buy, and I love the finished effect! I know that Boots have Barry M nail paints on offer for 2 for £5, which has included Black Magic Nail effects. I am unsure if the new colours are in this offer also but I will definitely be finding out in the next few days as I will be snapping these up for Summer 2011!

The Exhibitionist Issue of i-D magazine which was issued on 24th March showcases beautiful eclectic clothing. This issue has a series of four different covers. The first features Lady Gaga, photographed by Mariano Vivanco and styled by Nicola Formichetti for Mugler. I think you'll agree the images are beautiful, I LOVE the makeup, its stunning and so creative! What a beautiful selection of pictures!

Illamasqua - Toxic Nature 2011

It was just over a year ago when I heard about ILLAMASQUA, a new and exciting makeup brand which 'DARED TO BE DIFFERENT' and it certainly is that.

I study at Southampton Solent University and for one of our projects we were able to collaborate with the budding brand. I was able to meet Spob, one of the Illamasqua team, she gave us a talk about the brand, their heritage and what they are planning for the future! Exciting Stuff!

We were shown their brand film, which I love, its great to know how they evolved and where they take their inspiration from. Have a look at the brand film below :)

The brand has influenced how I see and use makeup now, allowing me to push the boundaries of makeup artistry and creativity, creating a dramatic look which may be developed in unconventional ways or techniques. This I feel, is exactly how Illamasqua feels towards makeup, they want to create 'ground-breaking and enhanced formulations'.

I love taking inspiration theatre, film and television as well as period looks, as you can see on my website www.francescarosemua.com which is extremely similar to the inspiration behind Illamasqua.

I have loved each and everyone of their makeup campaigns, each has been unique and individual, as well as breathtaking and original, like nothing I have seen before! AMAZING!

Bright eyes makeup trends for Spring/Summer 2011!

Trends in makeup evolve just as much as those in fashion. Makeup is forever changing and being developed to suit different clothing trends and fashion styles. It is important to keep up-to-date with current styles an techniques as this will help to give your image a contemporary feel. Allowing yourself to change and adapt your own makeup style will keep you feeling your best.

Using current trends within your makeup does not mean you have to conform to those ideas, you can just use elements such as colours, techniques and application etc.

One of the hottesest makeup trends for spring/Summer 2011 is bright eye colour, I think it is fab, just what you need to brighten up an outfit ready for Spring! Colours are warm and bold as well as evoking Spring/Summer and looking fresh and clean, without being over the top.

Vivienne Westwood at London Fashion Weekend 2011!

London Fashion Weekend is a great way to see the current makeup trends as well as how makeup has been used and shown. The makeup design throughout London Fashion Weekend was of a creative, vibrant and playful take on the medium. Fashion designers indulged in combining eccentric makeup whilst showcasing their personal collections, and in my opinion it gave a great visually exciting show.

A personal favourite of mine was Vivienne Westwood's creation. The makeup for her Red Label fashion show was created by the amazing Alex Box, her work is so inspirational, modern and individual. The looks she designed and executed were beautiful, colourful and unique. The models varied in the amount of makeup used, some had their own individual mist of makeup in bold contrasting colours which sculpted and highlighted the face, even though it appeared to be applied sporadically! Yet others had minimal makeup with only a stroke of colour. The makeup gives a painty feel yet graphic and grafitti-like.

Alex described her work as "...if a child has finger-painted over the top of a beautiful 18th century veneer painting. It's surreal but serene".

Not also forgetting to mention the hair designer, Malcolm Edwards. His work was sculptured, full of texture and conceptual, channelling the eccentric Vivienne Westwood which was perfectly shown. Textured to the max, each hairstyle was individually styled with a mix of shapes and angles, as well as the experimentation of colour in the hair and avant garde hair art. I think Malcolm Edwards described the show perfectly, saying it was

"Exciting, like Westwood should be"

The collaboration between Vivienne, Alex and Malcolm resulted in a chaotic mix of clashing patterns, bright colours and big hair!

Throughout the whole of this show it is easy to see the message that is being conveyed:Do not be afraid to lose your inhibitions. Choose to embrace the unexpected, experiment with new and different ideas, dont always conform to the usual, sometimes even dare to be unusual to create something unique and beautiful.

FMP: Greek Mythology: Medusa!

For my FMP, I'm creating a book inspired by mystical characters within Greek Mythology. One of the characters that I have been looking at today is Medusa :)

I'm really excited to experiment make-up looks and create a Medusa look. I'm hoping to give the look an editorial/fashion feel as opposed to a character make-up. Here are some images I have found that have inspired my creativity!!

1920's Make-up & Hair - Preparation for shoot 17/02/11

Uni went pretty well today! I had a drop in session with Elizabeth Barnett Lawton, one of our new specialist lecturers! Much appreciated :) Her keen eye and exciting outlook on makeup helped to motivate me with broadening my portfolio work.

Elizabeth has worked in the fashion department of Elle, and beauty departments of British Vogue,Harper’s, InStyle, Happy and Good Housekeeping magazines as a stylist, journalist and beauty director where she capitalised on her fashion degree to style celebrities and models for her glamorous beauty shoots.Her specialty is finding the ultimate combination of dress, jewellery and hair and makeup for events and weddings. We discussed my previous selection of work and went through the images which I have on my facebook page. She liked many of the shots and gave me advice and tips on how to enhance my images as well as ideas for re-shooting. We agreed on adapting a previous look that I have done, which is inspired by the 1920's.

1920's Research

I started by looking at make-up plans and design charts that have been designed with inspiration from 1920's. Here are some of the plans that I have liked.

Illamasqua

When thinking of makeup in the 1920's I instantly thought of creative make-up brand, Illamasqua.

Illamasqua is the product of a heady mix of influences. Its roots stem from the dark and illicit 1920s club scene and combines a rich heritage in the manufacture of make-up for film and theatre. It also takes inspiration from members of the ‘alternative scenes’ for whom self-expression is paramount. Alternative cultures have always dared to be dramatic. The brand takes inspiration from the 1920's which can be seen within their make-up advertising campaigns, public images and colour range.

Paris Fashion Week 2010 - Christian Dior "All dolled up" - Inspired by 1920's black and white films.

Make-up Tips

Face: The base is natural and of a slightly pale shade to give a fresh, porcelain look. The foundation is applied lightly but is powdered with white face powder. This helps to enhance the lightness and set the foundation.

Cheeks:

Slight highlight on the cheekbones can be applied as well as slight contouring of the cheeks. Blush is applied lightly to the apples of the cheeks in light pinks and peach tones.

Eyebrows: The eyebrows are one of the main features of the 1920's and are thin and heavily arched, the arch is rounded. If your model has naturally thick, dark or coarse eyebrows it may be easier to block these out and apply the desired shape with an eye shadow or eyebrow pencil.

Eyes: The eyes are a focal point of this era. Eye shadow in dark shades of green, purples and blues as well as black is used on the eyelid only to give a bold look. Eye liner can be applied to give an enhanced image, only in black. The eyes can be enhanced further with luscious thick coats of mascara and the use of false eyelashes. This dark eye contrasts the paleness of the skin and gives a stunning overall look.

Lips: I think this is the most important feature of this era. The lip shape has to be enhanced/ adapted to give a strong look. The bow of the lips is exaggerated using lip liner and lip stick, as well as the bottom lip being made to look fuller. The corner of the lips are thinned out slightly to give slight points in the mouth. Colours that are used on the lips are; deep red, dark burgundy, maroon and rich purple.

Hair Techniques

Finger waves were a must in the 1920's. The design created a water wave effect in the hair as it had similarities to rippling water. The hair is molded into place using product and heat to set the overall look.

60's Make-up and hair shoot - Final Images!

Yesterday was spent creating a 60's look that I can include in my make-up and hair portfolio. Following my research I tried and practised a sixties look that I had designed. I then applied the look of the era and created a bold make-up and hair design. I worked closely with the model and photographer to produce a stunning selection of pictures!

Swinging Sixties shoot!

I have spent most of the day so far going over new ideas and sourcing models for my portfolio and FMP. Its going pretty well, I have got 2 shoots provisionally sorted for next week (good stuff!) and hopefully I want to get one more sorted! That shouldn't be too hard!!

My first Shoot is on Tuesday and Im going for a 1960's inspired look. I was taken away by the 60's look in the new AOFM make-up book 'Makeup is art'. I think the picture is lovely and I hope to create something like this, luckily I have the perfect model too :)

From this book I have also looked at many other images from the 60's to inspire me :)

Twiggy was the super model of her time, 1960's beauty oozes from her and she looks effortlessly beautiful. Her signature look is how many people remember the 60's, with big, bold eyelashes, heavy eye liner and nude lips.

As well as Twiggy, there was also the ever beautiful Edie Sedgwick. Her iconic features and look of the time also gave her supermodel status.

Whilst researching the era and make-up/hair at the time, here are some of my favourite images that capture the beauty of the 1960's.

I love the hair and make-up in this, so natural looking - effortless

The 1960's had many elements within hair and make-up design/application that makes it stand out. Particularly the eyes and lips as well as signature hairstyles.To recreate a 60's look, there are few elements to be careful of. The look is made up by wearing thick, dark eyelashes, heavy eye liner, layered/contrasting eye shadow and a nude lip. This look can still be seen in areas of the fashion industry today and has been recycled many times by fashion designers for their catwalk looks.

The Face:

This is made up to look as natural as possible. Concealer is used sparingly as well as a sheer powder, to cover any blemishes or flaws. Alternatively a healthy looking primer, such as benefits pretty in pink or moisturiser can be applied to give the same look. Blusher can also be added to warm up the face, although its not a key element to this look. Pale colours are best to use, such as light peach, coral or pink.

The Eyes:

Prepare the eyes with primer and then lightly coat the lid with a natural/nude eye shadow, preferably a matt shade. White eye shadow can also be used and is often seen as a highlight colour on the brow bone. Then to add the contrast use a dark shade of eye shadow such as deep blue, black, dark grey or purple and add to the crease of the eye, creating a soft look.... Then for the exciting part: Eye liner! There are so many ways that the eye liner was applied that I have included images to show you the differences. However, in most cases the eye liner is dark, heavy and bold, it is usually exaggerated by being worn underneath the eyes and above the eyelid.

After the eye liner has dried you can attach the false lashes of your choice (remember to patch test and measure them on your eyes before application and apply mascara after!), alternatively you can apply a few thick, luscious coats of volumising mascara in jet black on bot sets of eyelashes: top and bottom! For an even more exaggerated look, eye lashes can also be applied on the bottom row or eye liner can be used to draw on a few eyelashes on the bottom lid, this creates a more prominent eye.

The Lips:

The key idea in the sixties was to have nude lips or very pale. Foundation can be used on the lips to take out any natural pinkness etc. Firstly, apply a lip liner to define the lip area and give a more polished overall finish. Matt lipsticks work really well for this look especially in nude, light peach and pale pink colours, off-white can also be very eye-catching. Lip gloss and lip sticks can also be used but should remain in pale tones.If your lips are very pink, then put some concealer over them to make them more pale. .

Pop art inspired make-up!

I am just researching and looking over some ideas for broadening my make-up portfolio, and came across some pop art inspired make-up! I absolutely love the creativity and work of these designs, I definitely want to create something like this.

Roy Lichtenstein's famous pop art pieces are well known for the bold primary colours, exaggerated shadowing/highlighting and lots and lots of dots :)

His work has been bought to life by Make-up artists and adapted to create gorgeous overall images. This is something I am hoping to explore myself (I will upload designs soon).

Karin Stone, a MAC cosmetics make-up artist recreated one of Lichtenstein's famous comic girls for a Halloween collection in 2009.
